Senior Researcher, Computational Mechanics - Turun ammattikorkeakoulu Oy

We are opening a fixed-term position of Senior Researcher to focus on digital twins for computational mechanics at the Technology Industry unit of Turku University of Applied Sciences. The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

We are seeking highly qualified candidates, including M.Sc. graduates, Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral researchers, and visiting researchers, to join the Computational Engineering and Analysis Research Group (COMEA) at Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland.

Your primary responsibility will be to synthesize computational mechanics models as digital twins for physical systems. You will connect different physics representations (e.g. dynamics of structures, thermal systems, multiphase flows, …) and different model representations (e.g. 3D Finite Element Analysis, 1D plug flow, …) into a unified computational entity that is connected to a physical system for real-time two-way data exchange. The key applications include, but are not limited to, 3D printing, atmospheric flow, water infiltration, and thermal energy storages. The models you develop will be used for run-time optimization and predictive maintenance of the physical systems. Your work will build upon the methods and models previously developed by the COMEA research group, and you will also be expected to contribute to other ongoing projects within the group.

This researcher position offers flexibility, allowing for customization based on individual interests and background knowledge. Especially for more experienced applicants, such as post-doctoral researchers, active participation in funding applications is expected.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

An academic degree in mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, thermodynamics, control systems, or a related field is beneficial, but strong programming skills (Python or equivalent) are necessary for the digital twin applications addressed in this position.

We especially value knowledge of, and interest in, mechanics of solids (Finite Element Analysis) or fluids (Computational Fluid Dynamics). You are expected to be familiar with one or more relevant numerical simulation software, such as ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM or Matlab/Simulink.

To succeed in this role, you must have a good command of the English language, as it serves as the primary language for communication and collaboration within our team and with our industry partners. Proficiency in Finnish is also considered an asset, given our close ties to the local community and industry.

You will work in a dynamic environment that requires a flexible attitude and openness to new research challenges that the group collectively tackles. You will be expected to explore and consider different application domains and modeling methods, adapting your approach to the ongoing project needs.

WHAT WE OFFER

We work on computational simulation models that help fight the climate change and improve the energy efficiency of physical systems and processes. Your work will contribute to these important objectives.

For candidates interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree, there is potential for collaboration with the University of Turku, Finland, pending approval for a Ph.D. studentship. Post-doctoral researchers and visiting researchers will have the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research and make significant contributions to the field, as well as establish a track record in acquiring research funding. The COMEA research group maintains a very active publication policy; please visit our website at https://comea.turkuamk.fi/ for more information.

The position also offers the option to participate in B.Sc. level tuition for a mechanical engineering degree program.

You will be part of our multidisciplinary community of more than 800 employees. We offer a professional working environment on Kupittaa Campus located in Turku, Southwest Finland.

The position is fixed-term, and the probationary period is half of the duration of the employment contract, however maximum of six months.

The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

In this position, work must be carried out in Finland.

Your salary is based on the actual demand level of your work in line with the career path and salary system of Turku University of Applied Sciences as well as the applicable collective agreement (AVAINTES).

We value diversity in our work community. Therefore, we hope to receive applications from applicants with diverse backgrounds, such as applicants of various ages and genders, applicants with varying language and cultural backgrounds, and applicants representing different minority groups.
