Deadline for applications 21.6.2026 at 23:59
Turku University of Applied Sciences is looking for an AI and Data Fusion Specialist / Senior Researcher to join the Cognitive Technologies research group and work in the international Horizon Europe project Sensor4Food.
Sensor4Food is an ambitious European research and innovation project focused on developing and validating advanced sensor technologies, multimodal data collection, and AI-based analytical methods to improve quality, safety, traceability, and process control across the food value chain.
JOB DESCRIPTION
In this role, you will act as a key expert in the AI and data fusion activities of the Sensor4Food project. Your work will focus on multimodal sensor data fusion, development of AI models, construction of data processing pipelines, and validation of analytical methods.
You will process and integrate data generated from multiple sources, such as sensor data, image data, spectral data, process data, and other measurement data related to the project demonstrations. The goal is to transform heterogeneous raw data into analysable, reliable, and scientifically useful information that supports quality, safety, and process understanding in the food value chain.
Your tasks will include data preprocessing, synchronization, modelling, application of machine learning methods, validation of results, and documentation of technical solutions. You will work closely with the project’s international partners in sensor technology, food technology, and AI.
The role is essential for the success of the Sensor4Food project, as the project’s impact depends on the reliable integration, analysis, and utilization of data generated by different sensor technologies through AI-based methods.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU
We expect you to have:
- a relevant higher education degree; a doctoral degree is considered a strong advantage
- strong expertise in AI, machine learning, data fusion, programming, and data processing
- experience in working with sensor data, computer vision, signal processing, multimodal analytics, or similar technical data
- experience in participating in large research and development projects in a key expert role
- the ability to design and implement data processing pipelines that integrate multiple data sources into a unified analytical framework
- strong Python-based software development skills
- the ability to test, validate, and document AI models and analytical methods for research and project reporting
- excellent spoken and written English skills.
We also value:
- experience in international research projects and multi-organization collaboration
- experience in EU-funded projects, especially Horizon Europe projects
- expertise in deep learning, computer vision, multimodal models, spectral data analysis, or time-series modelling
- experience with AI libraries and tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, Transformers, or similar
- experience with data infrastructures, databases, API solutions, and cloud-based or locally deployed analytical solutions
- the ability to work with scientifically uncertain, heterogeneous, and partially incomplete datasets
- an independent, solution-oriented, and persistent working style
- readiness to contribute to scientific publications
- Finnish language skills.
WHAT WE OFFER
We offer you the opportunity to work in a strategically significant Horizon Europe project combining advanced sensor technologies, AI, data fusion, and the development of the food value chain.
The position offers the opportunity to:
- develop and apply AI and data fusion methods in a real international research environment
- work with a high-level European consortium
